The top-seeded/world No. 1 Federer extended his Grand Slam winning streak to 16 straight matches with a 6-1, 6-2, 7-6 (10-8) victory over France's Thierry Ascione, who tested the sublime Swiss in the third set. Ascione had chance to claim the third-set tiebreak, but Federer held on for his ninth Grand Slam victory in as many tries this season.
Federer prevailed in 1 hour, 51 minutes with the help of five service breaks. The super Swiss held his serve all but one time to advance.
The reigning Wimbledon, U.S. Open and Aussie Open titlist Federer was last year's French Open runner-up to Spanish clay-court sensation Rafael Nadal and still needs Roland Garros to complete a coveted career Grand Slam.
Federer's third-round opponent will be Italian Potito Starace, who drilled Argentine Carlos Berlocq 6-2, 6-4, 6-2.
Davydenko, who reached the quarterfinals here a year ago and the semifinals in 2005, drubbed overmatched Austrian Werner Eschauer 7-5, 6-3, 6-1. Davydenko will face French crowd favorite Michael Llodra in the round of 32.
