ATP: Roddick wins opener in Austria
Prtschach, Austria (Sports Network) - Second-seeded American Andy Roddick was a straight-set opening-round winner Monday at the Hypo Group Tennis International, a final clay-court French Open tune-up.
The former world No. 1 Roddick handled Austrian wild card Alexander Peya 6-4, 7-5 at Werzer Tennis Arena. Roddick captured this event in 2003.
The U.S. Open runner-up Roddick's second-round opponent here will be Dane Kristian Pless, a 6-3, 6-3 victor against Argentine qualifier Carlos Berlocq on Day 2.
In other action involving seeds, No. 3 Croat Ivan Ljubicic held off American Amer Delic 7-6 (9-7), 7-6 (10-8), No. 7 Korean Hyung-Taik Lee leveled Thai Danai Udomchoke 6-3, 6-0 and French qualifier Mathieu Montcourt ousted No. 8 Belarusian Max Mirnyi 6-4, 6-4.
Other Day-2 wins came for Peruvian Luis Horna, Spaniard Albert Montanes, Italian qualifier Potito Starace and French wild card Gael Monfils. Horna will meet Ljubicic in the round of 16.
Nikolay Davydenko of Russia is the top seed and defending champion. He'll face Spaniard Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo here on Tuesday. Davydenko was the '03 runner- up here to Roddick.
