Colts' Glenn to retire

Indianapolis, IN (Sports Network) - Indianapolis Colts offensive tackle Tarik Glenn is reportedly set to retire from the National Football League.
According to a report in the Indianapolis Star, several sources close to Glenn have told the newspaper that the 10-year veteran is ready to walk away from the game.
The 31-year-old Glenn is the second-longest tenured player on the team and has appeared in the last three Pro Bowls. Overall, he has started 154 regular- season games for Indy.
Indianapolis originally selected Glenn with the 19th overall pick in the 1997 draft.

Castroneves upsets AGR for Mid-Ohio pole

Lexington, OH (Sports Network) - Brazilian Helio Castroneves beat out five other drivers, including all four Andretti Green Racing teammates, in the "Firestone Fast Six" to capture the pole for Sunday's inaugural The Honda 200 at Mid-Ohio IndyCar race. The No.3 Penske Racing Honda driver circled the 2.258-mile road course in one minute, 06.8375 seconds.
The pole victory was Castroneves' sixth of the season and 23rd of his IndyCar career.
"This team is fantastic, they never let me down," said a happy Castroneves. "We've been struggling a little bit."
Starting alongside Castroneves will be Danica Patrick who posted a second-best time of 1:07.1257.
"This is by far the best that I've done on a road course," said Patrick. "I'm really proud of the team. It feels good to have the Motorola car in the front row, not on an oval, but on a road course."
Tony Kanaan (1:07.1757) and Marco Andretti (1:07.3931) will start in row two.
Andretti was quickest in the one-lap preliminary qualifying session and led Dario Franchitti, Kanaan, Scott Dixon, Patrick and Castroneves in the six- person "Firestone Fast Six" shootout.
But it was Castroneves who laid down the best lap and though everyone took a shot at the time, no one could surpass it.
Dixon, starting sixth, so far this year has a win (Watkins Glen) and a second place (St. Petersburg) in two road course starts. It's not a fluke either. In 2006 Dixon earned a first, second and fourth in the three road course events.
Dixon seeks to improve on last year's fourth-place overall finish. In 2006 he collected two wins and nine top-fives. He already has those numbers in 2007 with still six races left on the schedule and is working on a two-race win streak.
"To come back and repeat at both (Watkins Glen and Nashville) is fantastic," said Dixon. "To be honest, things seem to come a little easier for me. I think it is a confidence level. Coming into these two races that were back to back, we've proven ourselves (at Nashville) last year, so you do come into a race weekend with more confidence."
Series points leader Franchitti has made the most starts at Mid-Ohio, but has little success to show for it. In six starts, Franchitti has just one top-10 (third in 1999) and finished 16th or lower four times.
The IndyCar driver with the most success on the 2.258-mile circuit is Castroneves. In four CART starts between 1998-2001 the Brazilian collected three top-10s including back-to-back wins in 2000 and 2001.
The race is set to drop the green flag on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. (et).

Raikkonen wins pole, Hamilton crashes

Nurburg, Germany (Sports Network) - Kimi Raikkonen captured the pole for Sunday's Grand Prix of Europe Formula One race. The No.6 Ferrari circled the 3.217 miles, 13-turn, road course in one minute, 31.450 seconds to edge out two-time World Champion Fernando Alonso.
However, the most important fact of the day was not the pole win by Raikkonen, but the fact that points leader Lewis Hamilton put his car into a tire wall. It appears that a right-front tire failure was the cause of the incident. Hamilton was taken to the medical center by ambulance but did give a wave to the fans from the stretcher.
According to team boss Ron Dennis, Hamilton has no serious injuries or broken bones, but will be kept under observation for at least a couple of hours.
Starting on the front row with Raikkonen will be Alonso, who posted a second- best time of 1:31.741.
Felipe Massa (1:31.778) and Nick Heidfeld (1:31.840) will start in row two.
While Hamilton and Raikkonen led all the practice sessions, Alonso was quickest in the first qualifying session that saw the elimination of Jenson Button, Scott Speed, Vitantonio Liuzzi, David Coulthard, Adrian Sutil and newcomer Marcus Winkelhock.
Winkelhock is a replacement for Christijan Albers who parted company with the Spyker team in a contract dispute. He is the son of Manfred Winkelhock, a former F1 driver and the team's official test driver.
Massa won the second session. Dropped from the final competition were: Nico Rosberg, Giancarlo Fisichella, Rubens Barrichello, Alex Wurz, Anthony Davidson and Takuma Sato.
While Ferrari drivers have won five of the nine Formula One races in 2007 they still find themselves trailing McLaren in every other category.
Hamilton is the series points leader having won twice (Canada, United States) and been on the podium in all nine races. Hamilton's teammate, Alonso, is second overall with two wins and six podiums. As a team, McLaren owns a 25- point lead over Ferrari in the manufacturer's championship (128-103).
Yet there is still reason for optimism at Ferrari. While the Ferrari lacked the speed in the two North American races, when the series returned to Europe their speed miraculously returned.
At Magny-Cours it was all Ferrari as Raikkonen and Massa swept to a one-two finish. The series next went to Silverstone and again Raikkonen led the way.
The pole victory was Raikkonen's second of the season and 13th of his Formula One career.
The race is set to drop the green flag on Sunday at 8 a.m. (et).

Nadal will meet Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland in Sunday's final after Wawrinka upset seventh-seeded Juan Ignacio Chela of Argentina 6-7 (2-7), 6-4, 6-1.
Wawrinka has just one ATP title to his credit, capturing the crown last year in Umag.
Nadal and Wawrinka have met just once before with the Spaniard winning at this year's Australian Open.

2007 British Open First Round News & Notes

Carnoustie, Scotland (Sports Network) - Who was the only player in the field to go through Carnoustie on Thursday without a bogey?

Would you believe an 18-year-old Northern Ireland amateur named Rory McIlroy?

He shot a three-under 68 to put himself in a tie for third with two of the last three U.S. Open champions. That 68 could have easily been a 66 and a share of the lead with Sergio Garcia."This is just awesome," said McIlroy. "I really enjoyed myself out there today. To play Carnoustie with no bogeys on your card, probably the toughest Open course, that's pretty good."McIlroy birdied the par-four fifth hole, then added another at 10. Labonte to replace Waltrip at Brickyard

Cornelius, NC (Sports Network) - Terry Labonte will replace Michael Waltrip in the No. 55 Toyota for next weekend's Allstate 400 at the Brickyard.
This will be the second time that the two-time Nextel Cup Series champion Labonte is replacing Waltrip, who cited the opportunity to evaluate his racing team as the reason for replacing himself behind the wheel.
"While we've planned to bring Terry back for the Watkins Glen road course event, I felt having him in the car next weekend at Indianapolis would be a great opportunity for me to continue to evaluate my entire organization from an owner's perspective," Waltrip said. "The feedback related to road-course racing that Terry was able to provide my team after Infineon Raceway was very valuable. We look forward to more of the same input after Indy."
Waltrip, who is 52nd in the standings, is expected to return to his No. 55 for the Pennsylvania 500 at Pocono Raceway on August 5.
Last month, Labonte piloted the No. 55 car to a 35th place finish at Infineon Raceway after starting 25th.
"It felt good to get back in the car in Sonoma and while it wasn't the finish I had hoped to deliver to the guys at (Michael Wlatrip Racing) and NAPA, I believe we learned quite a few things in which we can build on," Labonte said.
Labonte has eleven starts at Indianapolis. His best finish came in 1996 when he drove the No. 5 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet to a third-place finish.

Rose trying to end British Open slump

CARNOUSTIE, Scotland (AP) -- Justin Rose failed to qualify for the past three British Opens. Now he's back and hoping to end an eight-year shutout in majors for British golfers.
Paul Lawrie's victory at Carnoustie in 1999 was the last time any British -- or European -- golfer won a major, and that has become almost as embarrassing to the locals as Colin Montgomerie's failure to win even one.
The return to Carnoustie has fueled hopes of a British repeat here, and Rose appears to be the leading candidate. He tied for fifth at the Masters and 10th at the U.S. Open after being close to the lead early in both.
"Having played well in the last two majors, beginning to believe that's where I belong and just that alone makes it much easier to go out there and let it happen," Rose said Wednesday...Full Story

Orlando is still on the outside looking in

(Sports Network) - The addition of Rashard Lewis does not make the Orlando Magic a team that will be feared in the Eastern Conference. He is a scorer, but will not be a difference maker.
Lewis, who turns 28 on August 8th, is coming off the best campaign of his nine-year career and was awarded with a lucrative contract. Lions sign Redding to multi-year deal

Allen Park, MI (Sports Network) - The Detroit Lions have re-signed defensive tackle Cory Redding to a multi-year contract.
Financial terms of the new pact were not released, but the Detroit Free Press cited sources as saying it to be a seven-year deal worth close to $50 million with about $16 million guaranteed.
The Lions had designated Redding their non-exclusive franchise player in February and had until Monday afternoon to reach a long-term deal. If not, Redding would have had to play the 2007 campaign under a one-year contract.
Redding will enter his fifth season with the Lions, who selected him in the third round of the 2003 NFL Draft. He has played 55 consecutive games for the club, including 48 straight starts.
The 6-foot-4, 290-pound product of the University of Texas was forced to move from defensive end to tackle last season because of various injuries on the line. It proved to be a positive development.
After playing five games at end, he started the next 11 games at under tackle and tied for the league high among defensive tackles with eight sacks. Redding entered the 2006 season with a total of four sacks for his career.
During his four-year career at Texas, Redding was a two-time All-Big 12 selection. He finished his collegiate career with 201 tackles, including 123 solo, with 21 sacks.

2007 British Open Championship Preview

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Needless to say, the last time Carnoustie hosted the British Open Championship, it was quite a memorable tournament.
The year was 1999 and you might remember a certain obscure Frenchman named Jean van de Velde coming to the 72nd hole of the tournament three shots ahead of the equally unknown Paul Lawrie and Justin Leonard, the Open Champion two years prior.
From there, most Americans remember the sound of ABC's Curtis Strange calmly losing his mind as Van de Velde made a complete mess of the 18th at Carnoustie.
Not just any mess, but one marred by horrible shot-making and even worse decisions. Who could forget Van de Velde, pants rolled up his leg, trying to pull off a miracle shot from the burn? What most don't recall is that Van de Velde ended up holing a seven-footer for triple-bogey just to get into the playoff...Full Story

Only the third filly to capture the Belmont Stakes, Rags to Riches has been perfect this year in five starts while earning more than $1.29 million. She is trained by Pletcher for owners Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith.
