Champions PGA Tour:

West Des Moines, IA (Sports Network) - Jay Haas, the reigning Champions Tour Player of the Year, overcame a double-bogey on Saturday with six birdies in a seven-hole span to increase his lead at The Principal Charity Classic.

Haas shot a four-under 67 in the second round and is three ahead at 10-under- par 132.

David Edwards shot a three-under 68 on Saturday and is alone in second place at minus-seven. Denis Watson, who won the Senior PGA Championship last month, posted a four-under 67 and has third place at six-under-par 136.

Haas, who held a one-shot lead over Dave Eichelberger at the start of the second round, bogeyed the par-three second hole. He got that stroke back with a 10-foot birdie putt at the par-three fifth, but trouble loomed.

At the par-four eighth, Haas drove his ball well to the right. His second shot remained in the tall grass and he finally reached the putting surface with his fourth shot. Haas missed the 35-footer for bogey and found himself trailing the lead.

That was short-lived for Haas, an eight-time winner on the Champions Tour, including two this year. He reached the par-five ninth green in two and two- putted for a birdie from 25 feet. Haas made it two in a row with a sensational seven-iron tee ball that rolled back to a foot.

Spanish Soccer: Van Nistelrooy rescues Real Madrid's title hopes

Zaragoza, Spain (Sports Network) -Ruud van Nistelrooy scored in the 89th minute to give Real Madrid a 2-2 draw against Real Zaragoza at Estadio La Romareda on Saturday.

The result would have been a disaster for Madrid but Raul Tamudo equalized for Espanyol in the 90th minute to hold Barcelona to a 2-2 draw at Estadio Camp Nou. The third team in the title race, Sevilla, also was held to a draw as they finished 0-0 with Mallorca.

Madrid will enter the season's final day needing just a win against Mallorca to clinch its first La Liga title since the 2002-03 season.

With Madrid's title hopes on the ropes, Van Nistelrooy was able to get inside the six-yard box and push home the equalizer after a scramble in front.

Alberto Diego Milito put the home side ahead in the first half as he converted from the spot, but Van Nistelrooy answered with his first goal 12 minutes after the restart. Milito put home his second goal in the 64th minute to put Madrid in a tough spot, but Van Nistelrooy rescued a point with his 25th goal of the season.

Horse Racing: Rags to Riches wins Belmont

Elmont, NY (Sports Network) - Rags to Riches became the first filly to win the Belmont Stakes since in 102 years, edging Preakness winner Curlin by a head.

Riden by John Velazquez, Rags to Riches finished in an unofficial time of two minutes, 28.74 seconds for the 1 1/2 miles. The win also gives trainer Todd Pletcher his first Triple Crown winner.

Tiago finished in third and Hard Spun fourth.

Tanya was the last filly to win the Belmont Stakes in 1905.

Auto Racing: Wilson on pole at PIR

Portland, OR (Sports Network) - Robert Doornbos won Saturday's second Champ Car qualifying session, but Justin Wilson's time on Friday was faster and he will start on the pole for Sunday's Grand Prix of Portland.
Qualifying in the middle of a rain storm, Doornbos' time of one minute, 11.629 seconds (98.709 m.p.h.) won the former F1 driver a spot on the front row with Wilson. For winning the session, Doornbos will get one championship point as well as the spot on the front row.
Wilson's winning time on Friday was 58.000 seconds (121.903 m.p.h.).
There was one driver who circled the Portland International Raceway circuit faster than Doornbos, but Tristan Gommendy lost the time when he brought out a red flag at the 25-minute mark.
Gommendy spun the No.22 in turn seven and stalled. When he couldn't restart the car, officials brought out the red flag to get him out of harm's way. The penalty is the loss of your fastest lap and that made Doornbos a winner. In the session Graham Rahal was second quickest at 1:11.647 with Wilson third at 1:11.670.
The second row on Sunday will be made up of three-time series champion Sebastien Bourdais and Alex Tagliani. Bourdais owns a three-point lead over Will Power in the championship.
Power, if you can remember all the way back to April 8th, won the season opener in Las Vegas while Bourdais failed to finish the race after a crash on lap 32. Then the Frenchman came back to win in Long Beach and Houston.
The race scheduled to drop the green flag on Sunday at 4 p.m. (et).

MLB: Clemens K's seven in six innings

New York, NY (Sports Network) - New York Yankees pitcher Roger Clemens made his 2007 debut against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday and lasted six full innings.
The righty struck out seven and walked two while giving up three runs on five hits. He threw a total of 108 pitches, 69 for strikes.
Clemens is in line for the win as the Yankees hold a 6-3 lead going into the seventh.
Brian Bruney replaced Clemens on the mound for New York.
Clemens was initially slated to start this past Monday against the White Sox, but he developed a fatigued groin during his final minor league outing on Memorial Day and an MRI exam revealed disrupted scar tissue.
The seven-time Cy Young Award winner made three minor league starts to ready himself for a return to the majors. He signed a prorated $28 million contract on May 6 to begin a second tenure with the Yankees.
Clemens spent the past three seasons with the Houston Astros after his first retirement following the 2003 campaign with New York. He pitched with the Yankees from 1999 through 2003, winning a pair of World Series titles during his five years with the club.
An 11-time All-Star, Clemens' 348 victories rank eighth in big league history. He is also one of just four pitchers with more than 4,000 strikeouts, as his 4,604 trail only Nolan Ryan on the all-time list.
To make room on the roster for Clemens, New York optioned reliever Chris Britton to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Britton was recalled June 1 and was 0-0 with a 1.80 ERA in three appearances covering five innings for the Yankees this year.
In another roster move on Saturday, the Yankees transferred rookie pitcher Phil Hughes from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list.
The highly touted pitcher has been on the DL since May 4 with a strained left hamstring.

Formula 1: Hamilton leads McLaren sweep of front row in Canada

Montreal, Canada (Sports Network) - Lewis Hamilton won the pole for Sunday's Canadian Grand Prix. The No.2 McLaren Mercedes driver circled the 2.709-mile course on an island in the middle of the St. Lawrence river in one minute, 15.707 seconds.
The pole victory was the first of Hamilton's Formula One career.
Starting on the front row with Hamilton will be his teammate Fernando Alonso who posted a second-best time of 1:16.163.
Nick Heidfeld (1:16.266) and Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen (1:16.411) will make up row two. Felipe Massa was fifth quickest.
The first session, won by Raikkonen, saw Anthony Davidson, Ralf Schumacher, Heikki Kovalainen, Alex Wurz, Adrian Sutil and Christijan Albers eliminated.
Hamilton took the second 15-minute session, while Rubens Barrichello, American Scott Speed, Jenson Button and David Coulthard were among the six that failed to qualify for the final shootout.
Through five races, the story of 2007 is the resurgence of McLarenMercedes. Led by two-time F1 World Champion Alonso and super rookie Hamilton, the team has been shown great strength.
Alonso, who won his two titles with Renault, has finished on the podium four times including wins in Malaysia and Monaco. Hamilton has become the darling of the media, and deservedly so, after posting five consecutive podiums and becoming the youngest driver to lead the championship.
Ferrari on the other hand has shown flashes of brilliance and own three victories this season, two from Massa and one from Raikkonen. Massa has not finished lower than sixth, while Raikkonen has struggled a couple of times finishing eighth in Monaco (started 15th) and 19th at the Spanish Grand Prix.
Ferrari can't afford to slip up as McLaren has already shown they will make very few errors this year.
The race is set to drop the green flag at 1 p.m. (et) on Sunday.

ATP: Knowles and Nestor capture French Open title

Paris, France (Sports Network) - Long-time doubles stalwarts Mark Knowles and Daniel Nestor rallied past Lukas Dlouhy and Pavel Vizner, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4, to win the 2007 French Open.

The sixth-seeded tandem of the Bahamian Knowles and Canadian Nestor captured their first ever title at Roland Garros. It was the seventh Grand Slam final appearance for the tandem, who've also won U.S. and Australian Open titles while finishing as the runners-up at the French Open in 2002.

The ninth-seeded Czechs Dlouhy and Vizner had an impressive run to the final, shocking the top-seeded American Bryan brothers on Tuesday.

European PGA Tour: Green stretches lead to three at Fontana

Vienna, Austria (Sports Network) - Australian Richard Green extended his lead to three strokes through three rounds of the BA-CA Golf Open.

Green posted a four-under 67 Saturday at Fontana Golf Club to complete 54 holes at 15-under-par 198.

England's Richard McEvoy climbed into a second place at 12-under-par 201 thanks to a third-round 64. Miguel Angel Jimenez and Steven Jeppesen each shot 69 on Saturday and share third place at minus-11.

Green is on track for his first win since claiming his lone European Tour title at the 1997 Dubai Desert Classic. He got off to a steady start with eight straight pars.

Martin Erlandsson, who played in the final pairing with Green, birdied the third to join Green in the lead at 11-under. Erlandsson had several chances to grab the lead on his own, but could not convert.

The 36-year-old Green finally got on the board with a birdie on the par-five ninth. Around the turn, he rolled in consecutive nine-foot birdie putts from the 12th to move to 14-under, two clear of McEvoy.

Green parred his next four holes to remain there. At the par-five 18th, Green two-putted for birdie to finish three clear of the field as he has played the 18th at four-under through three rounds.

WTA: Henin completes hat trick at Roland Garros

Paris, France (Sports Network) - Justine Henin easily outmatched seventh- seeded Ana Ivanovic, winning 6-1, 6-2 to capture her third-straight French Open title on Saturday.

Henin, the top-seed and world No. 1, recovered from a shaky start to win her sixth major championship, including four of the last five French Open titles. She became the first three-peat champion here since Monica Seles accomplished the feat from 1990-92.

The 25-year-old also extended her winning streak to 35 sets at Roland Garros, an Open Era record.

The 19-year-old Ivanovic, who became the first-ever Serb to reach a Grand Slam final, appeared ready to seriously challenge Henin after the Belgian dropped her first serve on a double fault.

Henin, though, bounced right back, breaking Ivanovic's next three serves to cruise to the first set victory. Ivanovic finally earned her first service point in the second set to pull within 1-2, but it was not enough to generate any momentum as Henin won in a mere 65 minutes.

Henin appeared in her fifth final in her last five Grand Slam events. She performed in all four major title bouts last year (1-3) before missing this year's Australian Open due to personal reasons.

The diminutive star takes home just over $1.3 million, while Ivanovic will pocket $667,000.

MLB: Astros' Berkman appeals 2-game suspension

HOUSTON (AP) -- Astros first baseman Lance Berkman was suspended for two games and fined an undisclosed sum Friday, three days after he was ejected against Colorado and tossed his batting glove and equipment bag onto the field.
The suspension by Major League Baseball was to have begun Friday night against the
Chicago White Sox. Berkman, however, is appealing the decision and was to play Friday.
Berkman was ejected Tuesday night in the eighth inning after arguing a third strike. He then threw his glove and bag onto the field from the dugout.
He violated rules by returning in the ninth inning when the benches emptied after the Rockies'
Manny Corpas hit Houston's Carlos Lee with a pitch. The Astros won 4-1.

NFL: Broncos acquire DT Kennedy

St. Louis, MO (Sports Network) - The Denver Broncos acquired defensive tackle Jimmy Kennedy from the St. Louis Rams for an undisclosed draft in the 2008 NFL Draft.
Kennedy had been a disappointment in St. Louis since being taken with the 12th overall selection in the 2003 NFL Draft. Kennedy has totaled just 149 tackles and four sacks in 53 career games.
"We want to thank Jimmy for the contributions he made during his time here," Rams head coach Scott Linehan said. "After evaluating the young players we've brought in the last month and talking to our defensive coaching staff we felt the time was right to make this move."
To make room for Kennedy on their roster, the Broncos waived cornerback Eric Hill.

Nascar: Newman wins third straight Cup pole

Long Pond, PA (Sports Network) - Ryan Newman captured the pole for Sunday's Pocono 500 at the Pocono Raceway, his third consecutive pole win. The No.12 Penske Dodge circled the 2.5-mile tri-oval in 52.922 seconds (170.062 m.p.h.).
The pole victory was Newman's fourth of the season and 41st of his Nextel Cup career. In his sixth full season, Newman is tied with Mark Martin, who is in his 27th year, for 11th all-time.
"It was a good run, the Alltel Dodge guys did a good job," said Newman. "The car was fast off the truck, which makes a huge difference. We only did six laps in practice."
Starting alongside Newman will be Denny Hamlin who posted a second-best time of 53.167 seconds. Hamlin won the pole and this race last year.
Martin Truex Jr. (53.346) and Kyle Busch (53.527) will make up row two.
Dale Earnhardt Inc.'s Truex Jr. was dominant at Dover last Sunday leading a race-high 216 laps and winning by a whopping 7.355 seconds. It was a huge win for a team reeling from the news that their No.1 driver and NASCAR's most popular driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. will leave the team at the end of the season. It was also the first win for Truex Jr. and confirmed that the two- time Busch Series champion has finally arrived.
It was at Pocono last year that Hamlin "announced" his arrival by winning both events. Hamlin had made just 20 Nextel Cup starts before surprising both fans and experts with his win on the tough Long Pond, PA track. He repeated the feat six weeks later. Both times Kurt Busch finished second.
"We'll take the same car back and hopefully try to do the same thing and get a win one way or another," said Hamlin on the team's website.
Hamlin went on to make the "Chase" and finished third. He won the 2006 Nextel Cup Raybestos Rookie of the Year award. The No.11 Joe Gibbs Racing Chevrolet driver is currently fourth in the standings with eight top-10s.
Other notable drivers and their starting positions: Tony Stewart (6th), Jimmie Johnson (7th), Kasey Kahne (8th), Dale Earnhardt Jr. (13th), Jeff Gordon (18th) and Kevin Harvick (19th).
The race is scheduled to drop the green flag on Sunday at 2 p.m. (et).

European PGA Tour: Green leads by one at halfway stage in Austria

Vienna, Austria (Sports Network) - Australian Richard Green posted a six-under 65 Friday to take a one-stroke lead after two rounds of the BA-CA Golf Open at Fontana Golf Club.
Green completed 36 holes at 11-under-par 131. Martin Erlandsson remained in second place as he shot a three-under 68 to get to minus-10.
Spaniard Miguel Angel Jimenez (65) is tied for third place at nine-under-par 133 with Swedes Steven Jeppesen (66) and Pelle Edberg (66).
Green got off to a flying start with three birdies over the first four holes. After a pair of pars, he gave a shot back with a bogey on the par-three seventh.
The 36-year-old Green rebounded with birdies on eight and nine to grab a piece of the lead at minus-nine. After pars on the next two holes, he birdied the 12th from eight feet out to move one clear of the field.
Green slipped back into a share of the lead with a bogey at 14. He bounced back with a birdie on 15 and closed with a two-putt birdie on the par-five 18th to end at 11-under.
"I decided to take Robert Karlsson's advice last year and came to Fontana for the first time, played well and fell in love with the place," Green said. "The course fits my game well, just as Robert predicted. I feel very comfortable, its almost like playing at home."
Green is looking to snap a 10-year winless drought as his last title came at the 1997 Dubai Desert Classic.
"I've got to lift that monkey off my back," admitted Green. "I won the Australian Masters in 2004, which was a great achievement, but I would really love to win on the European Tour again. It's been 10 years since Dubai and I will certainly keep trying."
Erlandsson stumbled out of the gate with a bogey on the 10th. He atoned for that mistake with birdies at 12 and 15. He dropped another stroke at 17 to make the turn at minus-seven.
The Swede, who missed seven straight cuts to open the season, caught fire around the turn. He birdied the first, then three straight birdies from the third gave him the lead at 11-under.
Erlandsson, however, tripped to back-to-back bogeys from the sixth to drop back to nine-under. He birdied the ninth, his last, to end one back.

WTA: Molik, Santangelo capture women's doubles title in Paris

Paris, France (Sports Network) - Australian Alicia Molik and Italian Mara Santangelo paired to capture the 2007 French Open women's doubles championship on Friday.
The 17th-seeded tandem of Molik-Santangelo secured its first-ever Grand Slam title by upsetting a seventh-seeded duo of Slovenian Katarina Srebotnik and Japanese Ai Sugiyama 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 at Roland Garros. Molik and Santangelo reached the final by ousting a second-seeded pairing of Zimbabwe's Cara Black and South African Liezel Huber.
Sugiyama was also on the losing team here a year ago, when she and Slovakian Daniela Hantuchova succumbed to American Lisa Raymond and Aussie Samantha Stosur. Srebotnik and Sugiyama stunned Raymond and Stosur in the semifinals this week.
Molik and Santangelo will split $385,000.

ATP: It'll be Federer vs. Nadal once again in French final

Paris, France (Sports Network) - Ten-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer and reigning two-time French Open titlist Rafael Nadal will meet in a blockbuster final at Roland Garros for a second straight year here on Sunday.
The top-seeded Federer was anything but sharp in his semifinal, as the Swiss superstar bested fourth-seeded Russian Nikolay Davydenko in 7-5, 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (9-7) fashion on Day 13 at Roland Garros, while the second-seeded Nadal won his 20th straight French Open match by dousing sixth-seeded Serbian Novak Djokovic 7-5, 6-4, 6-2.
Nadal bested Federer in four sets in last year's finale here and erased the Swiss in the 2005 French Open semis.
The 25-year-old Federer needed just over three hours to sneak past Davydenko on Court Chatrier, and prevailed despite piling up 48 unforced errors.
Fortunately for the Swiss great, who ripped 10 aces on his way to the tough victory, Davydenko was even sloppier on Friday, as the Russian committed 58 errors, had five double faults and was broken four times.
Davydenko had an opportunity to get back into the match, as he held a 5-2 lead in the third set, but Federer charged back in the stanza and ultimately came out on top in the tiebreak by converting on a second match point, which came when the Russian misfired wide on a soft two-handed backhand.
"I could have lost in three sets," Federer said. "He's an excellent player. It's a superb win for me before the final."
The 26-year-old Davydenko, who appeared in the Aussie Open quarters back in January, has now lost in two French Open semis in the last three years.

Horse Racing: Belmont Stakes - Curlins race to lose

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - A field of seven will go postward on Saturday for the 139th running of the Belmont Stakes. Curlin, winner of the Preakness, is the morning line favorite, followed by Kentucky Derby runner-up Hard Spun and the filly, Rags to Riches. The other four are C P West, Tiago, Imwildandcrazyguy and Slews Tizzy.
Curlin came into the Derby undefeated but had raced just three times, all in his three-year-old season. The Steve Asmussen-trained colt did not hit the track as a two-year-old, but was still the morning line choice in the Run for the Roses. The son of Smart Strike wasnt able to run his usual "sit-stalk- mow" race after a slow break from post two. He was backwardly placed in 13th at the half-mile pole, some 12 lengths behind the early pacesetters, but picked up eight lengths on the leaders as the field galloped around the far turn. Despite the solid gain, it was not the best move of the race as Street Sense took apart the rest of the field with his devastating trip up the rail. Nonetheless, the Derby proved Curlin had the ability, in spite of the tremendous lack of seasoning and bottom needed to win on the "First Saturday in May."
Curlins preferred racing style is to be three-to-five lengths off the early, lead then roar by the field around the final turn. Thats how he was able to win his earlier races, even though they came against suspect competition. After tasting defeat for the first time at Churchill Downs, his first true test came in the Preakness and one can honestly say he passed with flying colors. After stumbling out of the gate, he settled further back than expected, but the pace was extremely quick up front. It took him a few strides to change leads down the stretch, but once he did, he had enough left to pass Street Sense by a head as the two raced to the wire.

NBA: Spurs clamp down on James, Cavs to take Game 1

San Antonio, TX (Sports Network) - Tim Duncan and Tony Parker dictated the offense and San Antonio's defense put the clamps on LeBron James, holding the superstar Cavalier to 14 points, as the Spurs beat Cleveland, 85-76, in Game 1 of the NBA Finals.

James, who came into the game averaging 25.8 points in the postseason while leading the Cavaliers to their first Finals appearance in franchise history, went 4-of-16 from the field. He missed his first eight shots from the floor and had six of his points in the final quarter, but the Cavs were behind by double digits most of the fourth.

Parker had 27 points and seven assists, while Duncan totaled 24 points, 13 rebounds and five blocked shots for the Spurs, who are going after their fourth NBA championship in nine seasons.

Daniel Gibson had 16 points on 7-of-9 shooting for the Cavaliers, who also got 14 points from Drew Gooden and 13 from Sasha Pavlovic. However, Cleveland couldn't deal with San Antonio's tenacious defense, as the Spurs swarmed James nearly every time he tried to drive to the basket.

Game 2 of this best-of-seven series is Sunday night in San Antonio.

MLB: Lohse leads Reds past Cards

St. Louis, MO (Sports Network) - Kyle Lohse tossed 8 1/3 quality innings and Edwin Encarnacion carried the load offensively, as the Cincinnati Reds beat the Cardinals, 5-1, in the finale of a three-game series at Busch Stadium.
Lohse (3-7) carried a shutout into the ninth and ended up yielding one run on seven hits over 8 1/3 innings.
Encarnacion finished 4-for-4 with a home run and three RBI for the Reds, who avoided the sweep and put a halt to a four-game losing streak. Ken Griffey Jr. and Adam Dunn also had homers in a winning effort.
Adam Wainwright (4-5) was charged with the loss after allowing four runs on eight hits over six innings for St. Louis, which had won three in a row.
A pair of long balls in the fourth staked the visitors to a 3-0 lead. Griffey led off the frame with his 13th homer of the season, a shot to right that put the Reds in front.
Brandon Phillips followed with a single before Encarnacion stepped in a batter later and cracked a home run to left.
The power surge continued in the sixth, as Dunn hit a solo home run to left that upped the Reds advantage to 4-0.
Cincinnati added one more in the eighth. Phillips started things with a one- out walk, and swiped second as Dunn struck out swinging. Encarnacion then came through with a base hit to center that brought in Phillips.
The Cards threatened in the home-half of the inning, putting runners on second and third with one out. Lohse put the next two batters down in order, though, to keep the shutout alive.
St. Louis broke through in the ninth on a Jim Edmonds single that plated Albert Pujols and chased Lohse from the game.
David Weathers came in and gave up a single to center before retiring the next two batters to end the game.

PGA Tour: Scott shares St. Jude lead with Jacobson

Memphis, TN (Sports Network) - Adam Scott made a 12-foot birdie putt at the 16th hole Thursday to join Fredrik Jacobson in the lead after one round of the Stanford St. Jude Championship.
Scott and Jacobson were at three-under 67, one shot ahead of Retief Goosen and Brian Gay at the TPC Southwind.
Scott Verplank, Gavin Coles and Duffy Waldorf shared fifth place another stroke further back at one-under 69. John Daly, David Toms and Justin Leonard led a group of 11 players who were tied at 70.
Daly, who lives in nearby Cordova, rattled off five consecutive birdies after making a triple-bogey on his third hole, the par-four 12th. He had two bogeys on the front nine.
On this day, it was good enough.
The scoreboard looked like it might belong to a U.S. Open, and the course played like it was hosting one -- good practice for the real thing next week.
The name of the course might be Southwind, but Thursday it was blowing every which way.
"This was survival today," said Daly, who failed to qualify for the U.S. Open at Oakmont. "You don't get shots into the wind or downwind. Everything is crosswind."

LPGA Tour: Three share lead at McDonald's LPGA

Havre de Grace, MD (Sports Network) - Kim Saiki-Maloney, Angela Park and Birdie Kim each shot five-under 67 Thursday to share the first-round lead at the McDonald's LPGA Championship.

Karrie Webb, Morgan Pressel, Stacy Prammanasudh and Laura Davies were a shot further back at four-under 68.
However, the focus on the second women's major of the season was elsewhere.
Michelle Wie missed a five-foot par putt on her third hole, the par-three 12th, and remained above par the rest of her round, getting as high as four- over after a double-bogey at the 15th.
She recovered to shoot a one-over 73.
The woman who was critical of her withdrawal from last week's Ginn Tribute fared better.
Annika Sorenstam opened with a two-under 70 at Bulle Rock while controversy brewed concerning comments she made about Wie on Wednesday. Sorenstam said the 17-year-old star showed a lack of "respect and class" by withdrawing from the tournament last Thursday with a wrist injury, only to show up two days later to practice for the LPGA Championship.

NFL: Saints ink DT Clancy

New Orleans, LA (Sports Network) - The New Orleans Saints signed defensive tackle Kendrick Clancy to a three-year contract Thursday.
Clancy spent last season with the Arizona Cardinals and started 11 games, notching 37 tackles, one sack and a forced fumble.
"We're happy to have Kendrick as a member of the Saints," said executive vice president/general manager Mickey Loomis. "We feel that he will improve our depth at the defensive tackle position. A player of his experience is a welcome addition to our club and we're eager to see him competing on the field."
Clancy has played eight years in the league with Pittsburgh, Arizona and the New York Giants, tallying 106 tackles and three sacks.
The Saints also released rookie long snapper Pat MacDonald.

NFL: Giants ink G Piller

East Rutherford, NJ (Sports Network) - The New York Giants Thursday signed guard Zach Piller to a contract.
Piller, who played the first eight years of his career in Tennessee, has appeared in 87 career games, 58 of which were starts.
Last season, Piller started three games before suffering an ankle injury on September 24 at Miami. The Titans waived him on February 21 before he signed with Detroit on March 26 but got cut on May 2.
Originally selected by Tennessee as a third-round draft pick in 1999 as the 81st overall selection, Piller played as a reserve guard for two-plus seasons before becoming a starter.

German Soccer: Ribery arrives in Germany

Munich, Germany (Sports Network) - Winger Franck Ribery joined Bayern Munich on Thursday via a four-year contract from Marseille.
The 24-year-old, who also attracted interest from the Premiership, netted 11 goals in 60 appearances since joining the Ligue 1 squad in 2005.
Ribery made a name for himself during the 2006 World Cup with France. Overall, he has tallied 18 caps and two goals for his country.
This was the sixth signing of the offseason for Bayern. On May 30, the club also added Fiorentina striker Luca Toni. Before Toni, the club acquired newly-signed players Hamit Altintop, Jan Schlaudraff, Jose Ernesto Sosa and Marcell Jansen.
Germany failed to secure a place in the Champions League for next season after finishing in fourth in the Bundesliga standings.

England's Soccer: Reina commits to Liverpool

Liverpool, England (Sports Network) - Liverpool signed goalkeeper Jose Reina to a long-term contract on Thursday that will keep the two parties united until 2012.
The 25-year-old arrived at Anfield from Villarreal in the summer of 2005 and has impressed boss Rafael Benitez right from the start with 30 shutouts in his first season.
"He's had two good years with us and because of his age we knew we had to sort out a long contract," Benitez said. "I'm really pleased that he has signed and I think it sends out a message to everyone that we are preparing our team for both the present and for the future."
Reina, called Pepe by his teammates, has made 104 overall appearances with the Reds, including 35 starts last season in the Premiership.
"Pepe's record at Liverpool is very good," said Benitez. "He's had a lot of clean sheets and you can see the confidence the defenders have in him. When he plays the defenders look very comfortable and that is so important. I've said before that he's the best goalkeeper in Spain but he's also one of the best in the world. In this country there are a couple of goalkeepers at the very top level and he is one of them."
Reina, who was born in Madrid, started his career with Barcelona. He was called up to the national team for the first time in 2005, before being called up by Spain for the 2006 World Cup.
Liverpool, which also just signed Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher to new deals this week, finished in third place of the Premiership with 68 points.

Horse Racing: Belmont Stakes field small but solid

Elmont, NY (Sports Network) - The 139th Belmont Stakes has a field of seven entered for the 1 1/2 miles. It may be a small group of three-year-olds, but it is a pretty solid contingent.
The only sophomore missing from the race that should be there is Street Sense. Taking his spot is leading filly Rags to Riches.
"Were going in because we think we have a chance to win," trainer Todd Pletcher said. "Weve got to hope that the five weeks between races, the pedigree that she has and the five pounds were getting maybe swings things our way."
Pletcher, who is the reigning champion trainer, is still seeking his first Triple Crown race victory. He has an excellent chance to win the Belmont with the filly. She has been rested since taking the Kentucky Oaks the day prior to the Run for the Roses.
"I said all along that I would not run her if the first three finishers from the first two legs (of the Triple Crown) ran," Pletcher said. "Shes been prepared for the last five weeks that she would run in the Belmont."
The only negative about Rags to Riches is the change of jockey. Her regular rider, Garrett Gomez, already committed to ride Hard Spun in the race. She gets Eclipse Award winner John Velazquez who has failed to win this race in 10 previous tries.
Despite the fact that this is her first time going against the boys, Rags to Riches is the 3-1 third choice in the morning line.

NHL: Ducks win first Stanley Cup title

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) -- The Anaheim Ducks were born on the silver screen and came of age by capturing the shiniest of silver cups.
They dropped the mighty from their name, but not their game and skated off with the first Stanley Cup championship in California history.
The 14-year-old Ducks captured the NHL title with a 6-2 victory over the
Ottawa Senators on Wednesday night, ending the series in five games in front of the home folks again.
For the first time, the Stanley Cup can enjoy an NHL western home, and the Ducks' victory came at the expense of Canada. The cherished trophy was born in Ottawa, but no team north of the border has won it since Montreal in 1993.
"Canada loves their hockey, and from what I heard out there, we have quite a few fans who love their hockey out here, too," said captain
Scott Niedermayer, a four-time champion from British Columbia and this year's Conn Smythe Trophy winner.
Calgary, Edmonton and now Ottawa -- in its first trip since the Senators were reborn in 1992 -- had three straight chances only to be done in by U.S. clubs from the sun belt. Tampa Bay, Carolina and Anaheim aren't traditional hockey hotbeds but they have been the Cup's warm weather homes since 2004.
Wayne Gretzky made the game a happening in Southern California when he came to Los Angeles in 1988, the Ducks made it legit two decades later. No longer Disney's darlings, the Mighty Ducks' movie days are gone. A victory rally awaits the new Ducks on Saturday...Full Story

NBA: Attention on James overshadows Spurs (AP)

SAN ANTONIO (AP) -- LeBron James will attract the spotlight. The San Antonio Spurs have earned it.
While most of the hype surrounding these NBA finals is centered on James, Cleveland's crowned king of roundball, the Spurs are again being overshadowed despite winning three titles since 1999.
There's nothing seductive about them. They don't run and gun like the
Phoenix Suns. Tim Duncan, their resident superstar, doesn't aspire to be a global icon or featured in any sneaker commercials. TV viewers channel surf right past their games.
The Spurs get no respect.

"We are kind of the vanilla of the NBA," guard Manu Ginobli said.
And every few years they're the favorite flavor.
On Thursday, the Spurs will begin their quest for a fourth championship as they host the
Cleveland Cavaliers in Game 1 of the NBA finals, a series being billed as King James' coming-out party but one that just as easily could turn into another Spurs coronation.
"This definitely is a model franchise," said Cavs coach Mike Brown, a San Antonio assistant when the club won its last title in 2005. "We can't be the Spurs. We don't have the same makeup as them or anything like that."
The Cavaliers do have James, and that could be enough.

ATP: Federer lands in French Open semis

Paris, France (Sports Network) - Top-seeded and world No. 1 superstar Roger Federer was a four-set quarterfinal winner Tuesday at the 2007 French Open.
Federer hiccuped in the second set on his way to an otherwise routine 7-5, 1-6, 6-1, 6-2 victory over ninth-seeded Spaniard Tommy Robredo on Court Chatrier at Roland Garros. Federer had won 36 straight sets in Grand Slam action before losing one against Robredo here on Day 10. The super Swiss had also won his last 11 Grand Slam matches in straight sets prior to Tuesday.
The 25-year-old Federer is now a perfect 8-0 lifetime against Robredo, including a quarterfinal win at this year's Aussie Open. The 10-time Grand Slam champion currently holds the Wimbledon, U.S. Open and Aussie Open crowns and needs the French to complete a career Grand Slam. Legendary Aussie Rod Laver was the last man to hold all four major titles, which he did by sweeping the Grand Slam events in 1969.
Federer was last year's French Open runner-up to Spanish clay-court sensation Rafael Nadal.
The amazing Federer has reached at least the semifinals in his last 12 Grand Slam events and has appeared in the last seven major finals. He's won 10 of the last 15 Grand Slam tournaments overall.
Federer will meet the Nikolay Davydenko-Guillermo Canas winner in the semifinals here on Friday.

Italian Soccer: Milan would sell Gilardino for 24 million euros

MILAN, June 5 (Reuters) - AC Milan are prepared to sell unsettled striker Alberto Gilardino for 24 million euros ($32 million) if he still wishes to move, club vice-president Adriano Galliani said on Tuesday.
The Italy forward, who scored 12 goals in Serie A last season, had said he does not feel fully appreciated at the San Siro.
"The team continues to believe and have faith in him," Galliani was quoted as saying on the club Web site (www.acmilan.com). "However, his comments in recent days are not particularly pleasing to us and therefore if he continues to be unhappy and wishes to move, we will let him go if a club bids 24 million euros."
Filippo Inzaghi was preferred to the former Parma forward in Milan's Champions League final win over Liverpool last month and took full advantage by scoring twice.
Galliani added that only Barcelona, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Inter Milan and "a couple of English clubs" could afford Gilardino, who will miss Italy's Euro 2008 qualifier in Lithaunia on Wednesday after deciding to have knee surgery.
Milan struggled for goals in the early part of the season after selling Andriy Shevchenko to Chelsea. They brought in Ronaldo in January but have since been linked with the return of Shevchenko or a bid for Arsenal striker Thierry Henry.
However, Galliani said they had already tried and failed to capture France's Henry.
"He is a player who we have always liked. After the transfer of Sheva we were close to buying him but the great man wanted to stay at the club that launched him and made him famous," he said.

Horse Racing: Rags to Riches confirmed for Belmont Stakes

Elmont, NY (Sports Network) - Leading three-year-old filly Rags to Riches will be entered in Saturday's 139th running of the Belmont Stakes at Belmont Park. Trainer Todd Pletcher made the announcement Tuesday morning.

Rags to Riches will be the lone female in the field for the final leg of racing's Triple Crown. She will attempt to become the third filly to win the Belmont Stakes. Ruthless won in 1867 and Tanya was victorious in 1905.

The filly is owned by Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith, and is undefeated this year in four starts. She won the Kentucky Oaks in her last start at Churchill Downs. Earlier this year Rags to Riches won the Santa Anita Oaks and the Las Virgenes Stakes. In five career starts she has earned $692,528.

Eight horses appear on course to be entered on Wednesday for the 1 1/2 mile Belmont Stakes. Along with Rags to Riches the field should include Preakness winner Curlin, Kentucky Derby runner-up Hard Spun, Santa Anita Derby winner Tiago, Lone Star Derby champ Slew's Tizzy, Imawildandcrazyguy, Digger and Time Squared.

WTA: Henin, Sharapova advance to French Open semis

Paris, France (Sports Network) - Top-ranked Belgian Justine Henin and second-seed Maria Sharapova advanced to the semifinals at the French Open after winning their quarterfinal matches on Tuesday in convincing fashion.
In a highly-anticpated showdown, Henin whipped former world No. 1 American Serena Williams 6-4, 6-3. Henin is now 2-0 against Williams in two meetings all-time at the French Open. Back in 2003, the Belgian also prevailed over Williams in a semifinal match here at Roland Garros.
Henin is a five-time Grand Slam champion, including three French Open titles in the last four years. She's won the last two French Opens, including a victory over Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova in last year's finale.
Henin will square off against fourth-seeded Serbian Jelena Jankovic, who earlier on Tuesday defeated sixth-seeded Czech Nicole Vaidisova 6-3, 7-5 to move into the semis.
Sharapova downed ninth-seeded fellow Russian Anna Chakvetadze 6-3, 6-4 to improve to 4-0 lifetime against her countrywoman, including a win in the Aussie Open quarters this past January. Sharapova also beat Chakvetadze here in Paris in 2005.
Next up for Sharapova is a match against seventh-seed Serb Ana Ivanovic, who stunned the third-seed Kuznetsova 6-0, 3-6, 6-1 to reach her first grand slam semifinal earlier on Tuesday.
The 20-year-old Sharapova is a two-time major titlist and has appeared in the last two Grand Slam finals. She prevailed at last year's U.S. Open and was routed by Williams in this year's Aussie Open title affair.
The semifinals will be held here on Thursday, with the winners to meet in the lucrative final on Saturday.

NHL: Penner's goal in third moves Ducks to brink of Cup

Ottawa, ON (Sports Network) - Dustin Penner scored the game-winning goal early in the third period and Andy McDonald added two goals and an assist as the Anaheim Ducks are one win away from their first championship after a 3-2 win over the Ottawa Senators in Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Finals at Scotiabank Place.

Jean-Sebastein Giguere made 21 saves for the Ducks, who lead the best-of-seven series, 3-1, and will look to close it out on home ice at the Honda Center in Game 5 on Wednesday.

Anaheim got the win without the services of defenseman Chris Pronger, who served a one-game suspension for throwing an elbow to the head of Ottawa's Dean McAmmond, who sat out the game due to lingering effects from a concussion he suffered on the play Saturday night.

Also, the Ducks played without winger Chris Kunitz, who sat out the game with an abdominal strain. Kunitz had played in Game 3 after missing the previous seven games due to a broken hand he suffered in Game 1 of the Western Conference finals against Detroit. However, he left Game 3 after two periods of play and was a scratch for Game 4.

Dany Heatley and Daniel Alfredsson each had a goal while Ray Emery stopped 18 shots in the loss for the Senators, who only had 10 shots on net in the final two periods after notching 13 in the first period.

PGA Tour: Clarke fails to qualify for U.S. Open

Far Hills, NJ (Sports Network) - The last of the U.S. Open sectional qualifiers were held Monday to determine the field for next week at Oakmont Country Club.
Some top players made it. Some did not.
Ryder Cup teammates Darren Clarke and Paul McGinley were among the players who failed to make it through the 36-hole qualifier at Walton Heath in Surrey, England.
For Clarke, it marked just the second time since 1997 that he failed to qualify for the U.S. Open.
"The current state of my game is not good for the U.S. Open anyway, so it is maybe not such a bad thing," said Clarke, who went 3-0 in Europe's Ryder Cup win last year while playing a little more than a month after his wife's death.
The nine spots available at the Surrey qualifier went to Nick Dougherty, Darren Fichardt, Peter Hanson, Marcus Fraser, Graeme McDowell, Miguel Rodriguez, Samuel Walker, Soren Kjeldsen and Christian Cevaer -- all Europeans.
Dougherty, Fichardt and Hanson were co-medalists at eight-under 136.
Other notables who failed to qualify at Walton Heath included former Ryder Cup player Miguel Angel Jimenez, Notah Begay III, Jean Van de Velde, and U.S. amateurs Garrett Osborn and Nathan Smith.
Across the Atlantic Ocean, most of the top PGA Tour players attempting to qualify were in Ohio.
One qualifier at Scioto Country Club in Columbus produced a thrilling finish when Anthony Kim won an 11-man playoff for the 24th and final spot available for 144 players.
Bubba Watson and Ryan Moore earned co-medalist honors at Scioto with six-under 136 totals. Among the players who joined them in qualifying were Camilo Villegas, Sean O'Hair, Boo Weekley and amateur Trip Kuehne.

LPGA Tour: Wie plays pro-am, still undecided on major

HAVRE DE GRACE, Md. (AP) -- Michelle Wie played in the pro-am Monday at the LPGA Championship and worked briefly with her swing coach, and her agent said there was a "good chance" the 17-year-old would play in the second major of the year.

Wie, who sat out four months with injuries to both wrists, withdrew after 16 holes of the Ginn Tribute last week in South Carolina, citing her wrists. She was 14 over par, and risked violating the LPGA Tour's rule that non-members who don't break 88 are banned for the year.

Wie and her agent, Greg Nared of William Morris Agency, have said the possibility of an 88 had nothing to do with her withdrawing.

The LPGA Championship at Bulle Rock starts Thursday.

Last year Wie finished tied for fifth, two shots behind Se Ri Pak, who won in a playoff.

"It's a good chance she's going to play," Nared said. "But it's still day-to-day."

Nascar: Truex Jr. gets first Cup win in Dover

Dover, DE (Sports Network) - For the second consecutive week a first-time winner made it to Victory Lane. Last week it was Casey Mears and on Monday Martin Truex Jr. captured the rain-delayed Autism Speaks 400 at the Dover International Speedway. The No.1 DEI Chevrolet driver crossed the finish line 7.355 seconds ahead of Ryan Newman.

The victory was the first of Truex Jr.'s 58-race Nextel Cup career.

Carl Edwards, Denny Hamlin and Matt Kenseth completed the top-five.

MLB: Florida's four-run fifth downs Braves

Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - Wes Obermueller outpitched Tim Hudson and Aaron Boone knocked in a pair of runs as Florida downed Atlanta, 6-4, in the first of a four-game series at Turner Field.
Looking 5 1/2 games up to Atlanta in the National League East starting play Monday, Florida moved a game closer with a workmanlike effort by Obermueller (2-3) and timely hitting from the batting order top to bottom.
Dan Uggla was the only Marlin with a multi-hit hit night and Miguel Cabrera's go-ahead sacrifice fly was part of Florida's big four-run fifth inning. Obermueller scattered three runs and eight hits with three walks and five strikeouts through five frames.
Yunel Escobar had a big night, replacing the injured Chipper Jones with a 4- for-4 night that featured a double and a long fly ball that skidded off the yellow line atop the right-field wall and over for his first major league home run.
Brian McCann recorded three hits in Atlanta's second straight setback.
Hudson (6-4), on the other hand, had a night to forget, yielding six runs -- five earned -- on seven hits with three walks and five strikeouts over six innings.
Atlanta took a quick 1-0 lead in the first on Willie Harris' double and McCann's run-scoring single. Florida quickly squared the game in the top of the second with Cabrera's leadoff triple and Jeremy Hermida's subsequent single.

WNBA: Monarchs lose forward Walker for season

Sacramento, CA (Sports Network) - Sacramento Monarchs forward DeMya Walker will be out the remainder of the season after suffering a torn patellar tendon in her right knee.
An MRI taken also confirmed a sprain to her MCL in the same knee, and she'll undergo surgery in the future.

Walker, who suffered her injury in Saturday's 88-85 win over the Los Angeles Sparks, started all five of the Monarchs games this season and averaged 8.8 points and five rebounds in 21 minutes per game.

NHL: Late goal from Alfredsson gives Sens 1-0 lead after one in Game 4

Ottawa, ON (Sports Network) - Daniel Alfredsson scored with just 0.3 seconds to play in the first period to help the Ottawa Senators take a 1-0 lead after in Game 4 of the Stanley Cup finals at Scotiabank place.
Anaheim leads the series, 2-1.
With the clock winding down and Ottawa skating on the power play after a goaltender interference on Ryan Getzlaf, Mike Fisher grabbed the puck at the low right boards and sent it behind the net to Peter Schaefer, who immediately fired it to the low right circle where Alfredsson one-timed it into the top left corner.
Ottawa thoroughly dominated the first period and outshot the Ducks, 13-2.
Ottawa grabbed control early as Anaheim continued its undisciplined play from Game 3 with a pair of penalties that led to two Senators power plays.
Another good opportunity for Ottawa came on the second power play when Antoine Vermette had a pair of shots down low, but Jean-Sebastien Giguere came up with two nice saves to keep the game scoreless about six minutes in.
A little after an Anaheim power play, which Ottawa killed off easily, Jason Spezza fired a centering pass from the right circle that Dany Heatley redirected on net, but Giguere came up with a sliding pad save.
The Ducks didn't even get their first shot on net until the 11:25 mark of the first when Corey Perry fired a shot on net the Ray Emery easily stopped.
Anaheim had its first good chance on a 2-on-1 with around seven minutes to play. Perry blasted a shot from the left circle that beat Emery, but it hit off the right post.

NBA: Favored Spurs won't underestimate Cavaliers

SAN ANTONIO (AP) -- LeBron James may be the star of the Cleveland Cavaliers, but the San Antonio Spurs know better than to ignore the other four players on the court.

"They wouldn't be in the finals without LeBron, we wouldn't be in the finals without Tim Duncan," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said Sunday. "That goes without saying. But they still would not be in the finals, nor would we, if we didn't each have our supporting casts. Everybody else has to fit."

San Antonio was 0-2 against Cleveland during the regular season. The Spurs lost their home opener to the Cavs, plus their January matchup in Cleveland, where the NBA finals will arrive for the first time later this month.

The Spurs held James to 19 points in the second meeting, but the Cavs put three other players in double figures in their 82-78 victory. Two other players scored eight points.

"We lost to them twice this season. They've been playing great," Duncan said. "They're on a high right now, playing with a lot of confidence. And they're going to be a tough opponent. We're going to have to really come out and shake this rust off quick this first game and really try to jump on them."

After beating the Utah Jazz in five games for the Western Conference championship, the Spurs will have had a full week off by Thursday's start to the NBA finals in San Antonio.

Cleveland wrapped up the Eastern Conference championship on Saturday in Game 6 against the Detroit Pistons. James scored 20 points in that game, but it was rookie Daniel Gibson's 31-point performance that stole the show.

NBA: Jordan praises James ahead of NBA finals

CHICAGO (AP) -- His Airness is paying tribute to the kid called King James.
Michael Jordan praised 22-year-old LeBron James for leading the Cleveland Cavaliers to victory over the Detroit Pistons in the Eastern Conference finals. The Cavaliers advanced to the finals for the first time in their 37-year history.
"What just transpired was something I felt was needed for the league, was needed for Cleveland, was needed for LeBron," Jordan said in Monday editions of the Chicago Tribune.

James dominated Game 5 against Detroit, scoring Cleveland's final 25 points in the win. The Cavaliers became just the third team to overcome an 0-2 deficit to win the conference finals.

Jordan, who won six NBA championships during his 13 seasons with the Chicago Bulls, said the next challenge for James is to achieve consistency.

PGA Tour: Choi moves to No. 17 in world rankings

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - After winning the Memorial on Sunday, K.J. Choi climbed 15 places to No. 17 in the latest Official World Golf Ranking.

The only change to the top 10 came in the last position, with Padraig Harrington moving past Retief Goosen and into the 10th spot.

No. 1 Tiger Woods was followed again by Phil Mickelson, Jim Furyk, Adam Scott, Ernie Els, Vijay Singh, Henrik Stenson, Geoff Ogilvy and Luke Donald.

Harrington and Goosen were trailed by No. 12 Sergio Garcia.

Rory Sabbatini moved up to 13th, dropping Masters winner Zach Johnson to 14th, while Trevor Immelman and Paul Casey remained 15th and 16th.

Choi was followed in the No. 17 position by Stewart Cink, who remained 18th, and Justin Rose, who dipped two places to 19th. Charles Howell III fell one spot to round out of the top 20.

MLB: Clemens has scar tissue injury, but still hopeful for Saturday

Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Roger Clemens has been diagnosed with a scar tissue injury in his right groin, although the Yankees are still hoping the seven-time CY Young Award winner will make his first start of the season on Saturday in the Bronx against Pittsburgh.

An MRI showed the disrupted scar tissue in Clemens, who was supposed to make his return to the majors Monday night against the White Sox, but he was scratched over the weekend in favor of Matt DeSalvo.

Clemens, who the Yankees signed to a prorated $28 million contract on May 6, pitched in three minor league starts, most recently on Memorial Day for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. It was in that outing against Toledo that Clemens is believed to have suffered his groin muscle injury.

New York was hoping that Clemens would be able to help the team make a major turnaround this season. The Yankees are 24-30, 12 1/2 games behind the first- place Red Sox in the AL East.

Clemens spent the past three seasons with the Houston Astros after his first retirement following the 2003 campaign with New York. He pitched with the Yankees from 1999 through 2003, winning a pair of World Series titles during his five years with the club.
