Hockey: Caps ink 2006 first-round pick Backstrom
Arlington, VA (Sports Network) - The Washington Capitals have signed center Nicklas Backstrom to a three-year entry-level contract.
Washington made the 19-year-old native of Sweden the fourth overall pick of the 2006 NHL Entry Draft.
Backstrom has been the leading scorer for Brynas in the Swedish Elite League each of the past two seasons. He scored 12 goals and assisted on 28 others for 40 points in 45 games this past season, then notched a goal and five assists in nine games for Sweden in the World Championship.
"Nicklas is a talented player who we are excited to add to our lineup," said Capitals vice president and general manager George McPhee. "We feel that he addresses an immediate need, but just as importantly, he is a skilled young player who we hope will be a key contributor for years to come."
Backstrom was the top rookie in the Swedish Elite League for the 2005-06 season when he notched 10 goals and 26 points in 46 games.
