Horse Racing: Street Sense skipping Belmont Stakes

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) -- Kentucky Derby winner Street Sense will skip the Belmont Stakes so trainer Carl Nafzger can prepare his colt for the Travers Stakes and Breeders' Cup Classic later this year.
Nafzger said he talked to owner James Tafel for two hours Wednesday night before deciding against a rematch with Preakness winner Curlin in the final leg of the Triple Crown.
Street Sense and jockey Calvin Borel appeared headed to the Belmont to chase the Triple Crown when he took the lead deep in the stretch at the Preakness, only to have Curlin and jockey Robby Albarado slip by at the wire.
So with the opportunity of being the first Triple Crown winner since Affirmed in 1978 gone, Tafel wants his colt to chase the possibility of becoming the first horse to win the Derby, the Breeders' Cup Juvenile, the Travers and the Breeders' Cup Classic.
