Horse Racing: Rags to Riches confirmed for Belmont Stakes
Elmont, NY (Sports Network) - Leading three-year-old filly Rags to Riches will be entered in Saturday's 139th running of the Belmont Stakes at Belmont Park. Trainer Todd Pletcher made the announcement Tuesday morning.
Rags to Riches will be the lone female in the field for the final leg of racing's Triple Crown. She will attempt to become the third filly to win the Belmont Stakes. Ruthless won in 1867 and Tanya was victorious in 1905.
The filly is owned by Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith, and is undefeated this year in four starts. She won the Kentucky Oaks in her last start at Churchill Downs. Earlier this year Rags to Riches won the Santa Anita Oaks and the Las Virgenes Stakes. In five career starts she has earned $692,528.
Eight horses appear on course to be entered on Wednesday for the 1 1/2 mile Belmont Stakes. Along with Rags to Riches the field should include Preakness winner Curlin, Kentucky Derby runner-up Hard Spun, Santa Anita Derby winner Tiago, Lone Star Derby champ Slew's Tizzy, Imawildandcrazyguy, Digger and Time Squared.
