WTA: Hingis advances at rainy Wimbledon

Wimbledon, England (Sports Network) - Former champion Martina Hingis was among the first-round winners Monday at Wimbledon, which has had its opening day dominated by rain thus far.
A ninth-seeded Hingis staved off a pair of match points in the second set in order to sneak past game British wild card Naomi Cavaday 6-7 (1-7), 7-5, 6-0 at the All England Club. The start of play was delayed for just over 2 1/2 hours and the wet stuff returned later in the afternoon to completely wreak havoc on the opening-day schedule.
Some light rain is also in the forecast here for Tuesday.
The former world No. 1 and five-time Grand Slam champion Hingis captured her lone Wimbledon title back in 1997, a year in which she corralled three of the four major titles as a spry 16-year old.
The Swiss Hingis' second-round opponent here will be Japan's Aiko Nakamura.
Another victor among top-16 seeds on Day 1 was No. 16 Israeli Shahar Peer, who dropped Thai veteran Tamarine Tanasugarn 7-5, 6-2.
In other action involving seeds, No. 20 Austrian Sybille Bammer blitzed Uzbekistan's Varvara Lepchenko 6-2, 6-2 and No. 25 Lucie Safarova handled fellow Czech Zuzana Ondraskova 7-5, 6-2.
Other Day-1 wins came for Italian Roberta Vinci, Estonian Kaia Kanepi, the aforementioned Nakamura and American Laura Granville.
