In other Day-1 play, Czech Lucie Safarova held off German Anna-Lena Groenefeld 7-6 (7-0), 7-6 (7-5) and Britain's Melanie South took out her fellow wild card Alicia Molik of Australia 1-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-3).
