Marseille bring Liverpool's Zenden into fold
Marseille, France (Sports Network) - Marseille announced on Friday that the team has signed midfielder Boudewijn Zenden on a free transfer from Liverpool.
The 30-year-old Zenden was let go by the Anfield club after the season, which finished with Zenden getting a starting spot in Liverpool's Champions League final defeat to AC Milan.
Zenden struggled with injuries during his two-year stay at Liverpool, and was limited to making 47 appearances and scoring two goals.
The Dutchman has played at prominent clubs such as PSV Eindhoven, Barcelona, Chelsea and Middlesbrough, and now will add Marseille to that list after signing a two-year deal with the Ligue 1 runners-up.
Zenden made 14 appearances with Liverpool in European competition and will get a chance to add to that total as a member of Marseille playing in the Champions League next season.
He may be joined at the club by former Liverpool teammate Djibril Cisse, who is reportedly close to signing with Marseille as well in an effort to help the team close the 17-point gap between themselves and six-time defending champions Lyon.
