ATP: Germans, Argentines win openers in team championship
Dusseldorf, Germany (Sports Network) - Germany and Argentina were winners Sunday on the opening day of play at the ATP World Team Championship.
The host Germans won all three of their matches against Belgium, while Argentina won two of three matches with Sweden.
Philipp Kohlschreiber and Florian Mayer each won singles matches for Germany and the doubles team of Michael Kohlmann and Andrew Waske was also victorious. Kohlschreiber notched a 6-3, 1-6, 6-1 victory over Olivier Rochus before Mayer posted a 6-3, 6-4 triumph over Kristof Vliegen. Kohlmann and Waske then completed the sweep with a 7-6 (7-4), 7-5 win over Rochus and Steve Darcis.
The Germans, who also beat the Belgians in the quarterfinals of the Davis Cup last month, now lead the Blue Group, which also includes the Czech Republic and Spain.
Argentina has a lead in the Red Group, which also consists of the United States and Chile.
