French Soccer: Toulouse snatches final Champions League spot behind Elmander

Toulouse, France (Sports Network) - Toulouse clinched an unlikely spot in the Champions League on Saturday at Stadium Municipal with a 3-1 win over Bordeaux as Johan Elmander scored all three goals.

Bordeaux entered the final day of the season needing just a draw to clinch a UEFA Cup spot, and things looked good after 17 minutes when Wendel put the club on top 1-0. However, Elmander had the teams on level terms before halftime and then scored two more times in the second half to secure the win.

Toulouse still needed help on two fronts to get into the Champions League despite the win, but everything fell into place perfectly and the club will now make its first ever appearance in the Champions League. Lens dropped a surprising 3-0 decision to relegation-bound Troyes, and Rennes conceded a late equalizer to Lille, allowing Toulouse to jump into the third spot.

Bordeaux, meanwhile, misses out on Europe as Rennes grabbed their UEFA Cup place with the draw.

Wendel's opener in the 17th minute came with a little help from Toulouse keeper Nicolas Douchez, who failed to pick up Wendel's long-range free kick and allowed the ball to slip between his legs.
