MLB: Davis strong as D-Backs hold off Phils
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Doug Davis pitched a season-high eight innings as Arizona Diamondbacks withstood a ninth-inning rally by Philadelphia to win, 5-4, in the opener of a three-game set.
With Arizona leading 5-1 in the bottom of the ninth, Diamondbacks closer Jose Valverde walked Shane Victorino to start the inning and Chase Utley singled to right. Valverde then struck out both Ryan Howard, who homered earlier in the game, and Aaron Rowand, but Greg Dobbs came through with a pinch-hit home run over the right field wall to pull Philadelphia within a run.
After Pat Burrell's pinch-hit single, Carlos Ruiz hit a seemingly routine groundball that slipped through first baseman Conor Jackson's legs and allowed pinch-runner Michael Bourn to reach third.
However, Diamondbacks manager Bob Melvin pulled Valverde in favor of Brandon Lyon and he got Rod Barajas to fly out to the warning track in right field for his second save of the season.
