MLB: Zito stars as Giants blank Mets

Flushing, NY (Sports Network) - Barry Zito threw seven solid innings and Pedro Feliz drove in all three runs as the San Francisco Giants beat the New York Mets, 3-0, at Shea Stadium.

Zito (5-5) won his second straight decision, allowing just six hits, walking one and striking out a season-high seven. The left-hander showed Mets fans first hand what they missed out on when the club decided not to increase its bid this past offseason for the Cy Young Award winner. He decided to sign a seven-year, $136 million deal with the Giants, instead of joining New York, which was unwilling to offer him that much cash and that many years.

He improved to 2-0 versus New York this season, having also beaten the Mets on May 7 in San Francisco.

Feliz ended 2-for-4 and Rich Aurilia went 4-for-4 for the Giants, who ended a four-game losing streak and evened this three-game set at a game apiece. On Tuesday night, San Francisco closer Armando Benitez blew a one-run lead in the 12th inning and New York escaped with a 5-4 win.

Benitez did not get a chance to relinquish this lead. Jack Taschner tossed a perfect eighth and Brad Hennessey worked a 1-2-3 ninth for his second save of the season, completing the six-hit shutout.
