MLS: Opening of Red Bull Park delayed
East Rutherford, NJ (Sports Network) - The opening of Red Bull New York's new $140 million stadium has been delayed because of cleanup of industrial waste and old foundations.
Red Bull Park in Harrison was originally scheduled to open in July 2008 but delays will push the opening back to at least September 2008. More delays would force the team to play the full 2008 schedule at Giants Stadium, where it has played for the last 11 seasons.
Oil and old structures were found below the surface at the construction site. If the stadium opened on time, New York would have played 10 home games at the new facility next season. If the stadium is ready by September, the team could play five games there next year.
The 25,000-seat stadium will feature a European-style roof.
