Sixth-seeded Spaniard Anabel Medina Garrigues also moved into the round of 16 by leveling Ukrainian wild card Yuliana Fedak 6-4, 6-3.
A mild upset came when Italian Maria Elena Camerin cut down 10th-seeded Aussie Nicole Pratt 6-4, 7-6 (7-3).
American qualifier Lilia Osterloh erased Czech Eva Birnerova 6-0, 6-2, while Aussie Alicia Molik snuck past lucky-loser Leanne Baker of New Zealand 7-6 (7-3), 2-6, 7-6 (7-5).
Additional opening-round wins came for German Tatjana Malek, Russian Elena Vesnina, Japan's Aiko Nakamura and Thai Tamarine Tanasugarn. Malek will face Bartoli in the second round.
