NHL: Former NHL star Balon passes away
New York, NY (Sports Network) - Former NHL star Dave Balon passed away on Tuesday, according to the New York Rangers, one of his former teams. He was 68 years old.
He had been suffering from multiple sclerosis for more than 30 years.
Balon made his NHL debut in the 1959-60 season with the Rangers and the left wing spent the next four seasons with New York before he was shipped to Montreal in a seven-player trade that involved goaltender Jacques Plante.
The move proved to be beneficial for Balon, who went on to win the Stanley Cup with the Canadiens in 1965 and 1966.
The Rangers reacquired Balon from Minnesota in June of 1968 and played with the Blueshirts up till the 1972 season when he was traded to Vancouver early in the campaign.
He played with the Canucks organization till the conclusion of the 1973 season and he attempted a comeback in the WHA with Quebec during the 1973-74 season, but the illness forced hit to retire in 1974.
