Tampa, FL (Sports Network) - Mike Sullivan was named the new assistant coach of the Tampa Bay Lightning on Thursday.

Sullivan, who becomes the 12th assistant coach in franchise history, replaces Craig Ramsay on head coach John Tortorella's staff. Ramsay was fired by the club on May 24.

"Mike Sullivan is a very bright, energetic, innovative and dynamic hockey coach," said Tampa general manager Jay Feaster. "He has experience as a head coach in the NHL and at the international level. Moreover, he was very successful as a head coach in the AHL. He has played professionally under Torts [Tortorella] and he shares with John a belief in how to coach and develop players. We believe he is the ideal candidate to help John Tortorella get the best and the most out of our players."

The 39-year-old Sullivan most recently was the head coach of the United State's men's team at the 2007 World Championships. Sullivan guided the Americans to a fifth place finish in the tournament.

Sullivan has also served as head coach with the Boston Bruins and was also the head man of their minor league club in Providence of the American Hockey League.
