WTA: Venus wins opener at a wet Roland Garros
Paris, France (Sports Network) - Venus Williams posted a first-round victory on a rainy Monday at the 2007 French Open. No less than 30 women's matches were either suspended or postponed because of inclement weather here on Day 2 after rain also wreaked havoc on Sunday's opening-day schedule at Roland Garros.
The 26th-seeded former world No. 1 Williams got past 17-year-old French wild card Alize Cornet 6-4, 6-3 in 88 minutes in a match that was originally postponed because of rain on Sunday.
"I went onto court without pressure, with no complex," Cornet said. "I started the match very well. I have no regrets, she is a great champion."
Williams moved on despite piling up 34 unforced errors over two sets against Cornet on Court Chatrier.
The 26-year-old Williams is a five-time major titlist and was the 2002 French Open runner-up to her younger sister Serena.
Sixteenth-seeded Chinese Na Li moved on with a 7-6 (7-4), 6-0 decision against German Sandra Kloesel, while 19th-seeded Italian Tathiana Garbin grounded Japan's Akiko Morigami 7-6 (7-2), 6-4.
